TOTWTYTR wrote a post exploring why he let his membership to the NAEMT (you know, the organization that bills itself as the “National Association of EMTs”)

Why does the NAEMT purport to represent us? Why? What is it’s purpose? What has it ever done? Why would anyone ever be a member of this group?

No really, I’m asking here. I am publicly calling out the NAEMT and those that support it. If you want to come and explain to me in a public forum WHY I should pay my money and be a member of your group I will be happy to hear it. If you can convince me, I will buy a membership. If you can’t, I will continue to have my opinion that I would have anyway.

  • They sent me a bunch of free stuff a couple weeks ago... like pretty decent free stuff: a jump kit fully stocked with supplies and stuff.... worth at least another year's membership!
  • HPSO is still the malpractice carrier. NSO is their sister company, which is where my wife gets her malpractice policy. And, as I said in the other posting, she gets approximately 3 times the coverage for about half the cost of what I have. As to why that is, I don't know.

    I'm very much in agreement about the whole Trauma thing. If they paid more attention to what their members cared about instead of stupid crap like that then maybe they would attract more members. And you are absolutely right about the Catch-22; I've talked to a few people who made similar observations. It seems as though there is no way around it, either. At least for now...

    As far as I know, NAEMT still offers a discount through HPSO, which is a reputable company.

    As far as NAEMT's effectiveness, it's a Catch-22: They don't wield much clout because most EMTs don't belong, and most EMTs won'y join because it doesn't wield much clout.

    I think they could go a long way toward attracting new members by getting rid of the incestuous, good-old-boy board that seems to have the same faces year after year, and actually taking a hard stand on important EMS issues.

    Unfortunately, sternly-worded missives about NBC's Trauma are about all it seems capable of.
  • I have to keep asking myself why I spend the $40 every year as well. After all, the only reason I keep the membership is so that I can get the so-called "discount" on malpractice insurance which, incidentally, costs more than what my wife, as an RN, carries and carries about a third of the coverage. I simply don't get it. I like the new layout, by the way. And your entry in my blogroll has been duly fixed...
  • I explored that "malpractice insurance" they offer a few years ago. The company seemed waaaay shady. I was in the market at the time to buy 15 policies for the medics working for a start-up EMS company that I owned. They didn't care and I couldn't seem to be able to speak to a representative of the company that would say other than "Uh... well you could have em' all go to the web site" and "Ummm... well can you go to the web site?" Sigh... I never bought anything from that company and I never will.

    Really, I'm serious here on the post. I have NEVER seen anything good about the NAEMT. Can someone tell me something good about it? Please? I'd really like to find out that I'm wrong here. Really I would.
