Holy crap! Read this: Odenville, AL Fire Chief Terminated  FireLawBlog.com

Did I read that correctly? Did a Fire Chief really FLUSH TWO STILLBORN TWINS DOWN A TOILET!?

No way, that's gotta be a hoax… I mean, that can't happen, right? Please tell me that nobody is that stupid. Please restore at least a little of my faith in humanity…

Nobody? <sigh>

FireLawBlog.com's story on this has a link to the St. Clair Times article on the subject, and it looks like there's a lot more to this story than has been reported. The comments on the article are pretty telling… although I still have very little idea on what actually went on here. At face value, I can't see any possible reason that this would have happened. I just don't understand. Maybe if she miscarried into the commode maybe? I suppose they *could* have missed them… right?

Eww.

Also, the former chief defended himself with this cryptic statement, which I've seen repeated three times in various articles on the story:

"There were two of us there, and we followed protocol,” Davis said. “We followed the state protocol issued by the medic who was in charge at the scene.”

Soooo… Um… The medic… issues state protocol? and he/she ordered this? Aaaannnd… I'm sorry I just don't understand the statement. Maybe it's a bad quote, I don't know.

Anyway, here's the followup story. I just thought I'd call it to your attention.

    After picking my jaw up off the floor the following thought struck me: “Why do people even make excuses for this stuff?” I mean I understand the desire to explain an occurrence, but aren’t there some things that simply don’t have a reasonable explanation?  They’re not reasonable behaviors and rather than covering for ourselves, can’t we just step forward and say “that was stupid and I have no idea why I did it”?  I guess not.

    Did anyone check the chief to make sure he had a pulse?  that’s the only way I can think this happened.

    Aaaand another case where EMS is gonna get the dirty end of the stick.  No matter that it was the dumb-asses FIRE Chief that did it, he immediatly threw it on the Medic.  Yea, I’m biased and bitter towards FF’s but this is a ‘No Brainer’.  He is the Fire CHIEF!!  He is responsible for everything that thappens and with all his Great Fire Chief experience he should know better. I refuse to believe that anyone with half a brain would actually do this.  Good job you over-paid fat-gutted truck driver.

    The link to the Saint Clair site is broken so I was unable to read the article there. The one on fire law blog didn’t say anything about where she miscarried, or how she was medically (uncontrolled bleeding, etc) I can say that prior to this call, Alabama had no written protocol (still doesn’t excuse the fire chief’s actions) but it does now have a protocol written about what to do with fetal remains. I am sure there are 2 sides to the story, but unfortunately due to HIPPA, we may never know the full story, just what is brought out in court.
